Protests
are often very effective at highlighting problems - but they
are limited in the extent that they can communicate the positive
alternatives that are available. It is or intention to promote
features showing low impact lifestyles and positive social
programs. These features will be a quick and effective counter
to the common truism that "there is no alternative".
We
invite Independent film makers including the Undercurrents
family to take up this opportunity offered by the internet.
Information Technology offers the possibility to get really
positive programming out there without the sugar coating
of sensationalism. These films don't have to be about third
world countries, they probably won't involve large-scale
street parties or global days of action but for those looking
for an alternative they will be some of the most interesting
features on the internet.
Features
on positive community projects will try to involve the Internet
user in environmental and social justice issues by focusing
on the local rather the global. We'll follow the path of
the issues from the frontline friction to the possible projects
that may help. We'll offer possible courses of action. We
want to remove the impersonal and passive nature of news
presentation. We'd like to say here's a problem - here's
what some people are doing about it - and here's what you
can do to help.
The
Undercurrents foundation has made a series of films about
positive solutions to environmental and social problems.
We will showcase these short films and encourage media activists
to make more.
